HEAD: Short, wedge shaped with broad forehead and circular deep jowls tapering into a small muzzle. Ears are short (a little longer in mares), tips curved slightly inwards. Eyes are large, set low in the head, soft expressive and dark, no white. In summer skin around eyes and nostrils should be bare. The head should exhibit a dish, a concave "afnas" depression, slight to extreme below the eyes. Bulge above the eyes caused by the dish is called a "jibbah". Nostrils are large and fine and able to have great expansion.
Neck: Set on high, long and arched - fine through throat - carried high. Rounded curve between neck and head called the "mitbah" enables him to flex naturally at the poll.
Chest: Broad to medium width but must be accommodated by deep girth in a mare. Shoulder: Long and sloping.
Withers: Well developed to slight, depending on type.
Legs: Well defined tendons - dense bone NOT coarse - short cannon bones. Small hard hooves set directly under knees or hocks.
Back: Short with slight concave for saddle. Loins are broad and strong with long flat croup and high hip.
Tail: MUST be set on high and carried high - can be carried to the side as long as high set.
Body: Must have plenty of girth - heart and lung room, remember we are talking about endurance horses! Colour: Bay, Chestnut, Grey, Brown, Black. Note - sabino and ticking are common. Skin is black even in a grey horse except under white markings. Hair is fine and silky.
